This project consisted of the construction of over 161,491 square feet. Located in northern Jessamine County, Southland currently serves a congregation of over 6,500 with the addition serving a variety of uses. Recreation is an important aspect of Southland’s ministry philosophy whose need the large activities / exercise building consisting of 125,078 square feet serve. The major design component provides a flexible area with the major element being the four basketball / volleyball courts, elevated running / walking track, weight rooms and aerobics rooms. The large court area has retractable seating for 1500 spectators with ample storage and locker rooms to support large numbers of people and almost constant use. Additional spaces provided include administrative area, classrooms, stage and children’s area. A major element of the addition includes a “gathering atrium” consisting of 58,026 square feet that serves as fellowship space. This 2-story component includes dining for 900 persons at one sitting. The gathering atrium is supported by a full service kitchen and several quick service food venues on the first floor. The second floor includes a resource area comprised of a Christian bookstore and church library complete with computer workstations. Several “seminar” type rooms with flexible arrangements were included on the second floor of this component. The new facilities are linked together and connected to the existing building via an enclosed concourse or “armature” that creates a mall-like atmosphere and is sized to handle large volumes of pedestrian traffic.
